This 18th century cottage was the former Three Crowns public house run by Mally Pashley. It is situated out of area on Woodsome Road, just beyond the Kirkburton boundary, at Dogley Bridge.

Highburton Primitive Methodist Chapel was built in 1832 to accommodate the growing number of Non-conformist worshippers in Highburton. The Sunday School on the right was added in 1896. Following declining numbers, the Chapel closed in 1973 and is now a private house.

The branch line from Deighton to Kirkburton was opened in 1867. Plans to extend the line to the Barnsley coalfields never materialised. The line closed to passengers in the 1930’s, but goods were transported to the ICI factory until 1971.

This was named after local mill owner William Carter who developed the Dean Dye Works in the 1840’s. The manager’s larger house was at the top of the row of terraced houses. William lived nearby in an impressive Victorian villa, The Dene.

On the left can be found many shops including hairdressers, a chemists, a bakery, and a sweet shop. Ellis Mill on the right had many uses after its closure for manufacturing including a grocers and meeting place for the Salvation Army. It was demolished in 1974.

Hepworth’s Garage can be seen on the left just before Ellis Square. Across the road was Ellis Mill, a huge multi-storey mill which was opened in the 1820’s by Edward Ellis and his business partner, William Carter. The mill saw many uses in its lifetime, but was demolished in 1974.

Beyond the Drill Hall, opened in 1911, there are two pairs of semi detached houses then the Shelley Lane council estate. The houses were built in 1952-1953 to commemorate Queen Elizabeth II’s Coronation. One of the roads in the estate is aptly name Queensway. The annual feast/fair was held in the fields and one of the roads in the new estate was named Fairfield Rise.

Kirkburton had a swimming pool with slipper baths in Low Town. Joseph Pickering applied to the Local Board for permission and had it built in 1884. He lived next door in the house known as Bath House on Bath Street, the shortest street in the village.

This hamlet and the Inn were known as being in Kirkburton, however they are actually situated in Shelley. The Inn, currently known as The Woodman, has had various names over the years.

Park View at Spring Grove, had uninterrupted views over the Woodsome
Valley. One of the cottages, owned by the Church, was used to house the Village Nurse until the late 1920’s.

St John’s Terrace is before the White Swan Public House found at the junction of Penistone Road and Far Dean. The chimney of the 18th century Toll House, demolished in 1958, can also be seen.

The Hospital was built as an asylum in 1904. It had two entrance lodges leading to the central administrative block, the wards and extensive grounds. Although closer to Kirkburton than any other of the surrounding villages, the land was within Thurstonland district. When the boundaries changed in 1938 it was within Kirkburton Urban District.

The hospital was known as the Fourth West Riding Pauper Lunatic Asylum. It accommodated over 3,000 patients at its peak during World War Two. After joining the National Health Service in 1948 it was known as Storthes Hall Hospital. Following the introduction of ‘Care in the Community’ during the 1980’s, the number of patients declined and the hospital closed in 1992.

The asylum was newly built in 1904. Patients were never admitted from the local villages.

This kitchen was one of two which provided food for up to 3,000 patients, much of which had been produced on its own farm.

Storthes Hall had excellent sporting facilities including tennis courts, a football pitch and a cricket field with a pavilion for the benefit of patients and staff.

The dustbin men made weekly collections in the village. The storage depot for the dust carts was at Dean Bottom, Spring Grove.
